Planning Your Post Wedding Photography

There are a few things that I would suggest that you pay your due diligence to if you want to make the most out of your post wedding photoshoot and don’t want to feel that you just wasted a significant chunk of money for mediocre photos.

Choosing the Right Photographer

Let’s talk about the most obvious thing that you must consider when planning your post wedding photography – Choosing the right photographer.

You just can’t afford to go wrong on this one, everything else can be managed but you ain’t gonna change your photographer after you have reached the location. I mean you practically can’t even if you do you’ll be losing a hell lot of your hard earned money. So it’s best that you take care of it in advance.

Look for someone who understands your vision and style and makes you feel comfortable.

Establishing a rapport with your photographer is very important so don’t hesitate to ask questions and share your ideas and if you two can not come to a mutual understanding, no issues, move on. Find another photographer.

Choosing the Right Location

Next, let’s talk locations. Now this comes down to your specific taste and preference. Maybe you are a beach person and you dream of a romantic beach backdrop or maybe you want your photos to have more of a modern day aesthetic in a vibrant urban setting.

What I want to say is that – the location sets the tone for your photoshoot.

Think about places that hold special meaning to you as a couple, it could be a place where you two met for the first time or the place you travelled together for the first time.

You can also take a completely different approach and explore new and exciting environments. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and get adventurous!

Choosing the Theme and Concept

Now let’s assume that you’ve nailed down the perfect photographer for your taste and the perfect location in town – what’s next?

Well, it’s time to get creative with themes and concepts. Start brainstorming ideas.

Whether you’re inspired by nature, culture, or something entirely unique to you as a couple, your imagination is the limit here.

From whimsical fairytale themes to adventurous outdoor escapades, let your thoughts run wild and come up with something that aligns perfectly with you two as a couple.

And if by chance you decide to work with me then I give you my words that together, we’ll bring your vision to life and create a photoshoot that’s as one-of-a-kind as your love story. More about how you can contact me later, let’s continue with the article.

Creative Ideas and Themes

Now that we’ve got the basics covered, let’s dive into the fun part: creative ideas and themes for your post wedding photoshoot! Here are some unique concepts to inspire you:

Romantic Settings:

If you are considering going for a romantic setting for your post wedding photography, you can consider picturesque locations like beaches, gardens, or places with stunning sunset views.

  • Beaches often offer a serene backdrop with soft sands and crashing waves.
  • Gardens provide lush greenery and vibrant blooms which is absolutely perfect for a romantic atmosphere.
  • Sunset views add a magical touch with warm hues painting the sky.

Urban Landscapes:

Now for those modern day romance themes you must embrace all  the hustle and bustle of city streets or find beauty in unexpected places like graffiti walls.

  • City streets give us a really dynamic backdrop with towering buildings and bustling energy.
  • Graffiti walls further add an edgy vibe and can also serve as colourful backdrops for striking images. Roam around a little and you’ll find great locations.

Adventure Themes:

For the adventurous couple, explore unique settings like underwater, mountain trails, or forests. This is one of the most fun and challenging post wedding photography themes. Outdoor wedding photography often provides opportunities that can make for really interesting photos.

  • Underwater photoshoots capture a sense of wonder and magic. Now you’ll need access to a clean swimming pool reserved all for yourself in order to pull this shoot off.
  • Mountain trails offer breathtaking views and opportunities for epic shots amidst nature’s beauty. Go to the Himalayas, chase the golden hour and you’ll have the pictures worth saving for your life.
  • Forests provide a tranquil setting with dappled sunlight filtering through the trees, creating an ethereal atmosphere. You may need to get permits in advance and also have to be aware of wild animals.

Cultural or Personalised Themes:

If you want to infuse your photoshoot with elements that reflect your cultural heritage or personal interests then you must go for cultural themes.

  • It incorporates traditional attire or customs that hold significance for you as a couple.
  • Showcase hobbies or passions, whether it’s cooking together, playing music, or hiking in the great outdoors.

With these creative ideas and themes, your post wedding photography is sure to be a reflection of your unique love story. I’ve created a quick summary table below so that you can review all the themes with a bird’s eye view.

Tips for a Successful Post Wedding Photography

Now that you’ve chosen your themes and locations, it’s time to ensure your post-wedding photoshoot goes off without a hitch. Here are some key tips to keep in mind:

Timing and Lighting Considerations:

Although this is not something that you have to deal with, it’s completely optional but if you do it’ll benefit you by allowing the photographer to get his best shots.

Always try to schedule your post wedding photoshoot during the golden hours, it could either be sunrise or sunset whatever suits you and your photographer the best.

It’ll give you that soft, flattering light and your photographer will really appreciate your understanding and give his best work to you.

Relaxation and Authenticity

Post wedding photoshoot is not a live event like the traditional wedding photoshoot. Take your time, don’t be nervous, be relaxed and comfortable.

If stepping in front of the camera makes you camera anxious then take a few deep breaths and try to calm yourself down before the shoot begins. The more relaxed you are, the more natural and authentic your photos will be.

Let your raw emotions come out, focus on each other and enjoy your company. Share the love you two have for each other rather than worrying about getting clicked.

Doing this will tremendously improve the quality of your photos as the photographer will be able to capture raw emotions in your photos.

Incorporating Candid Moments

Expanding upon the previous point, some of the most memorable shots are often the unplanned candid moments, these shots show the true emotions of the moment.

Don’t shy away from being spontaneous. You want to kiss your partner, do it. You want to lift them up, do it. You want to put your head on their shoulder, do it. Let your true personality shine through and you’ll have a collection of photos you’ll treasure for life.

Laugh, dance, and most importantly enjoy each other’s company and I believe whoever you hire as a photographer will capture those genuine moments of connection.

Remember, the goal of your post wedding photoshoot is to capture the essence of your love story in its purest form. As my mentor, Mr. Manoj Kagra always says, “Photography is not just about capturing images; it’s about capturing emotions and creating timeless memories.”

Dress and Attire Considerations

It’s no brainer that if you dress well then your photos are gonna come out good. Selecting the perfect set of clothes to wear for your post-wedding photoshoot is essential if you want to capture your love story in a unique way.

Consider embracing the “trash the dress” trend for an adventurous and unconventional photoshoot that creates bold, striking images. You can read my article on “trash the dress” photography to get an in-depth idea about this style of photoshoot.

If you are not into something like trash the dress style then you can explore alternatives to traditional wedding attire and find something that reflects your personality and the vibe that you want in your photos.

It could be anything – a sleek jumpsuit, a flowy bohemian dress, or old money classic combos, choose any attire that makes you feel confident and comfortable.

One more tip that I would like to share is, always take precautions with your clothes. Make sure you get them dry cleaned before and after the photoshoot. For best results always keep your clothes in a breathable garment bag to protect it from damages which will ultimately lead to better pictures.

The goal here is to get yourself a set of cloth that complements the overall theme and mood of your photoshoot while staying true to who you are as a couple.

Post-Production and Editing

After you are done with your post wedding photography session and captured all those beautiful moments, it’s time to bring your images to life through post-production and editing. And you have to understand that there is no rushing the process, you have to wait for your photographer to get done with the editing.

As my mentor, Mr. Manoj, always says, “Photography is incomplete without post-production.” Clicking the shutter button is just the beginning; the real magic happens during post-production.

Lightroom is the name of the software where your photos are turned from pictures to work of art. It allows us to enhance and refine your photos. When doing post-production we have the power to adjust the exposure and colour balance as well as removing blemishes and distractions.

So basically, this is where we fine-tune every detail of your photos and give life to it.

Preserving Memories

Now that you are done with everything related to your post-wedding photoshoot, the next and equally important thing that you have to do is think about how you’ll preserve these memories for decades to come.

Here are a few things that you can do to make sure that your beautiful images stand the test of time just like your love:

Printing and Framing:

Upon receiving the final photos, select your favourite images and ask your photographer or get them printed on high-quality archival paper and frame these prints to display in your home. This will also serve as a daily reminder of the loy and joy captured in each photo.

Creating Photo Books or Albums:

You also must ask your photographer if they are going to include a photo book or album in the package or not. If not then ask them to, you might have to spend a little more but it’ll be worth it. It will allow you to flip through your memories anytime you wish to relive the moments of your post-wedding photoshoot.

Share It On Social Media

Who does not want to share pictures on social media, right? Well we all know it’s a wonderful way to spread joy and celebrate your love story with friends and family and it can also be a great place to keep your favourite pictures forever (Unless you decide to delete them).

Remember, your post-wedding photoshoot is about creating lasting memories that you can treasure for your lifetime, be sure to preserve these precious moments in every way you can.

Conclusion

In conclusion I would like to say that planning a post-wedding photoshoot requires you to select the right photographer who understands your vision and can give life to it.

Also choosing a location and theme that reflect your love story is just as important as choosing the photographer.
